From Triathlons to Business: Lessons in Sprinting Towards Success

Over the past month, I’ve reconnected with 15-20 people, with most saying, “Why didn’t I know about you and triathlon?!”

For others, this will come as a funny surprise since they’ll distinctly remember being bored to death on the topic.

The name Sprint Partners is inspired by my experience representing Great Britain in Sprint Triathlon (and being a partner to clients, helping them sprint toward their growth goals). I competed at the World and European Championships, ranking as high as 15th in my age group.

So why risk being snapped looking silly in a trisuit doing such a niche sport? Because, for me, sport teaches lessons that are highly applicable to business and life. Here are some parallels:

  • Master the basics: Success builds on simple habits – eat, sleep, train, repeat. In business, looking after yourself and mastering the fundamentals (especially sleep, which is tough for parents!) can lay the foundation for sustainable success.
  • Goal-setting: In triathlon, I aim for one or two big races a year but break these down into hundreds of micro-goals along the way. The same applies to growing a business. Incremental progress compounds over time.
  • Consistency: You don’t need to train at full throttle every day. Just consistently show up and chip away at your long-term plans.
  • Discipline: Whether it’s early-morning cold-water swims or writing pitches late at night, embracing what you least enjoy builds resilience and momentum.
  • Input = Output: It’s not uncommon to feel out of your depth or face imposter syndrome. Yet, whether it’s digging deep to finish a race or flying overnight for an in-person meeting, effort almost always equals reward.

Every day, I draw parallels from triathlon and apply them to both work and life. It’s not only why Sprint Partners is called what it is but also why I developed the proprietary Sprint Accelerator Model (SAM) to help businesses plan and deliver growth.

SAM leverages the concept of heart rate zone training, used by elite athletes, to guide businesses through a structured approach to achieving rapid, sustainable growth. Each zone represents a different intensity level, focusing on key aspects of business operations to ensure growth is both rapid and balanced. Read more here.

Similarly, our PACE framework (Positivity, Accountability, Collaboration, Empowerment) drives everything we do. Read more here.
