“Be safe.”

Every time I head out on my bike, the parting words from family echo in my mind. Simple as they sound, they stay with me – a constant reminder of how quickly things can change.

Chris Froome knows that better than most. Just last week, the four-time Tour de France champion collided with a road sign in training at over 30mph. The result: five broken ribs, a collapsed lung, a fractured vertebra – and, in surgery, doctors discovered a life-threatening tear around his heart.

This isn’t the first time Froome has faced such a setback. In 2019, another crash left him in intensive care and ruled him out of the Tour. Yet time and again, he’s found a way back. It’s part of what has defined his career: seven Grand Tour wins, two Olympic medals, and a reputation as one of the toughest riders of his generation.

For leaders in business as much as in sport, there are clear lessons:

💪 Resilience matters most. Crashes happen – it’s how you respond that counts.
💪 Play the long game. Careers, like Tours, are won over stages, not sprints.
💪 Lead under pressure. Froome’s greatest moments came with teams and nations watching.

As he begins another long recovery, his career is a reminder that success isn’t about avoiding the falls – it’s about the courage and discipline to rise, reset, and ride again.

Get well soon, Chris.
